Introduction to XML
This seems to be a good overview of what XML is and how it can be used, in technical terms at least. However, because it is so technical, it is hard to follow, and is probably only of use as a reference for someone who already knows what it means.
A Survey of XML Standards
This article shows just how much there is to a standard like XML, and all the related standards. I can see this being useful to help a person figure out all of the different standards they need to keep in mind while using XML.
Extending Your Markup
I thought this was the most useful reading. It does a good job of going over, in English, what XML is and how it works. After reading this, the other readings make more sense than they did before.
Introduction to XML Schema
This is another good tutorial from W3Schools. Their tutorials are usually helpful -- simple enough to make sense to someone who is not too familiar with the content, but detailed enough to give the reader a good understanding.
